For many households, the washing machine is the only appliance that never gets a proper clean. We replace kitchen sponges every few weeks and scrub vacuum bags, yet we rarely inspect the inside of our laundry appliances. Detergent residue and sebum mix with trapped moisture, creating an environment where mould can thrive. Panasonic’s new CARE+ Edition washing machine aims to solve this with a suite of self-maintenance features designed to keep the drum sanitary and the laundry fresh. [1] Seniors-only initiatives often follow this logic of proactive maintenance to ensure longevity.
The Drum Cleans Itself
The CARE+ Edition includes an Auto Tub Clean function that runs after every wash cycle to clean both the interior drum and the exterior of the machine. Once the wash is finished, the machine automatically dries the drum with a 30- or 60-minute program, provided the door is closed within eight hours. This reduces the need for owners to manually clean the drum or remember to leave the door ajar.
Steam Refresh and Stain Removal
Owners often face the dilemma of lightly worn clothes that are not dirty enough for a full wash but too wrinkled to wear. The Steam Refresh function tackles this problem by using steam—rather than water and detergent—to reduce wrinkles and deodorize garments in 37 minutes. The drum continues to rotate periodically to prevent new wrinkles from setting in, offering a convenient middle ground between a full wash and a wardrobe overhaul.
For stains, Panasonic offers StainMaster+, which uses steam to treat stubborn spots like coffee spills or muddy uniforms while removing up to 99% of allergens. The technology works at lower temperatures, allowing users to clean without reaching for harsh detergents or high heat settings. Blue Ag+ technology provides an alternative for cold washes, using UV light and silver ions to eliminate up to 99.9% of bacteria.
This focus on garment preservation changes how often we should actually run a full cycle. The ability to refresh items with steam means high-quality fabrics can skip a wash, extending the lifespan of cotton shirts and delicate dresses. When a stain does appear, treating it with steam rather than heat protects the integrity of the material, keeping clothes looking newer for longer. [2] Just as a range is optimized for specific cooking tasks, these specialized settings protect specific fabrics.
Smart Drying
Over-drying clothes is another common cause of wear and tear, often resulting in curled collars or stretched elastic. Panasonic addresses this with Optimal Dry mode, which adjusts the drying time based on the specific load. The system uses only the necessary energy and time to complete the cycle, which may help lower electricity bills.
