Seniors-Only Tech Cafe Opens in Bedok to Lend Health Gadgets

A seniors-only ‘tech cafe’ has opened in Bedok, offering residents a chance to borrow free health gadgets. The Care Tech Café at Heartbeat@Bedok allows seniors to test out modern eldercare devices before buying them, addressing concerns about high costs and unfamiliarity with technology.

How the program works

The initiative acts as an interactive pop-up center where seniors and their caregivers can view and test equipment. Rather than purchasing expensive gear blindly, residents living in Kampong Chai Chee can borrow items for free for up to one week. This trial period helps users build trust in the devices before making a financial commitment.

Costs for these devices vary significantly. Basic medical grips can run about $100, while advanced companion robots exceed $10,000. By removing the upfront financial risk, the program aims to make it easier for older adults to integrate new tools into their daily lives without fear of wasting money on products that don’t suit their needs.

Available technology

Visitors can explore a range of gadgets designed for health monitoring and rehabilitation. Smartwatches and smart rings allow users to track vital signs like blood pressure and follow guided exercise routines. For physical therapy, the café offers medical hand grips and virtual drumming apps that combine digital music therapy with hand-strengthening exercises.

The collection includes advanced AI robots such as LOVOT, Kebbi, and Hyodol, which focus on companionship and social interaction. A Japanese LOVOT 3.0 is currently listed around $4,636 Singapore dollars on the manufacturer’s website, illustrating the premium tier of equipment available for trial.

Staffing the center are trained youth volunteers and senior volunteers from local Active Ageing Centres. This mix of generations creates a supportive environment where digital skill-building happens naturally through conversation and hands-on help.

This approach to technology adoption offers a practical counterpoint to the usual sales-driven model. Rather than presenting the devices as complex upgrades, the café frames them as tools to be tested and understood. This mirrors how other communities have successfully introduced assistive tech by prioritizing education and comfort over the allure of high-tech features. If a device feels intrusive or difficult to use, the trial period makes it easy to walk away, a flexibility often missing in traditional retail environments.

Heartbeat@Bedok was officially designated an “Age Well Neighbourhood” as part of Singapore’s push to support aging in place. The Care Tech Café fits into this broader network, designed to help seniors maintain independence and safety at home.
