LIXIL hosted a plumbing workshop for teen girls from Tools & Tiaras Summer Camp at its Water Experience Center in New York City on August 3. The workshop aimed to introduce young women to careers in plumbing, an industry facing a growing workforce shortage.
The United States could face approximately 550,000 unfilled plumbing jobs by 2027, according to a report titled Blocked Pipes: The Economic Consequences of Skilled Worker Shortages. Adding just 16,400 plumbers could generate nearly $3 billion in economic activity and save an estimated $1.27 billion annually in plumbing-related costs.
Throughout the afternoon, campers worked in teams using tablets to complete kitchen and bath design challenges. They received guidance from plumbers, designers, and other industry professionals as they selected plumbing fixtures and fittings for real-world scenarios.
Participants also explored innovative products and technologies showcased throughout the LIXIL Water Experience Center. The program combined hands-on design challenges with mentorship from industry professionals, developed in partnership with the nonprofit founded by tradeswoman and advocate Judaline Cassidy.
Women account for just 2.1% of plumbers in the U.S., making initiatives like this workshop essential for creating opportunities and promoting diversity in the field.
Amie Milano, leader of client and customer experience at LIXIL, said, “Watching these young women approach each challenge with curiosity, creativity, and confidence was incredibly inspiring. By giving young women hands-on exposure, we’re helping them discover a career that blends creativity, innovation, and technical expertise while making a real difference in people’s everyday lives.”
The workshop concluded with teams presenting their work to an all-female jury, which included designers Faten Baassiri, Susann Eva Goerg, Jenny Peysin, and Julie Schuster, as well as Jeannette Long, leader of plumber engagement at LIXIL.
Following the presentations, Team B was selected as the winner for its exceptional communication, teamwork, and ability to fulfill and exceed the client’s expectations.
LIXIL’s commitment to promoting diversity is evident in its partnership with Tools & Tiaras Summer Camp. The LIXIL Water Experience Center provides a unique platform for showcasing innovative products and technologies, such as outdoor kitchen designs.
