The London College of Garden Design announced Jo Thompson as its new head of garden design studies, effective September 2026. Thompson, an award-winning garden designer, will lead the college’s flagship Garden Design Diploma program, which has produced numerous graduates now working in garden design.
New Leadership Takes the Helm
Joining Thompson is Duncan Cargill, who will serve as deputy head of garden design studies. Cargill, co-founder of the design studio Cargill Sykes, brings experience in mentoring designers and helping them develop creative confidence and technical expertise.
Both Thompson and Cargill will continue practicing garden design for their own clients while overseeing curriculum development, student learning, and industry engagement at LCGD. Their appointments mark a new chapter for the college, which has been actively hiring practicing professionals to strengthen its teaching faculty.
Thompson’s recent work includes the Archers 75th Anniversary Garden at RHS Badminton Flower Show and displays at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Known for her romantic, color-led design approach, she has also developed a reputation for making complex design principles accessible to students.
“It’s a huge honour to be asked to take on this role at the London College of Garden Design,” Thompson said. “The college has been incredibly influential in supporting new design talent over the last 20 years, and I am really proud to now have the opportunity to work with them.”
She emphasized the importance of mentorship, stating, “I know just how important good guidance and mentorship is, and together with Duncan, I’m looking forward to being able to work with the next generation of garden designers, helping them to understand how to create gardens by going beyond the textbooks and digging deeper into what makes a truly successful outdoor space.””
