Abu Dhabi’s Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC) has launched a collaboration with The Boring Company, the firm created by Elon Musk, to assess cutting-edge underground systems for the emirate’s infrastructure needs.

A major partnership, solidified at LIVEX 2026, seeks to assess how cutting-edge tunneling methods can improve transportation and utility systems in Abu Dhabi.

The initiative is designed to expand urban capacity, making more efficient and strategic use of available subterranean space, with ADPIC overseeing a substantial infrastructure portfolio valued at $56 billion. This substantial portfolio shows Abu Dhabi’s proactive approach in bolstering its economic competitiveness, accommodating anticipated population growth, and raising the overall quality of life for residents and businesses.

The integration of advanced tunnelling solutions holds significant implications for Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban planning framework, potentially alleviating surface congestion and optimising land use. By developing underground pathways for transport, the city can also reduce environmental impact often associated with traditional above-ground expansion projects, aligning closely with global trends in smart city development.

For essential utilities, underground systems can shield critical infrastructure from environmental damage and simplify maintenance, ensuring a more dependable and durable service network. This approach is vital for supporting the long-term needs of a growing city, and working with innovative firms like The Boring Company could establish new standards for urban development and technology integration.
