The 1,858-square-metre Pavillon, designed by Sid Lee Architecture, expands the spa’s thermal circuit with a panoramic Aufguss sauna, deepening visitors’ connection to the St. Lawrence River. The project integrates local materials, including spruce and native plants, reflecting Quebecois roots.
Architectural Integration and Design Philosophy
The Pavillon’s design emphasizes transparency and coexistence with its surroundings. Jean Pelland, principal partner at Sid Lee Architecture, stated the goal was to reveal the view rather than impose upon it. The structure features panoramic windows in the sauna, allowing guests to observe the river during hourly Aufguss rituals. These nearly 15-minute heat sessions are led by guides, responding to evolving wellness trends.
The building’s exposed steel structure draws inspiration from naval architecture, with sleek surfaces and large tubular pipes. A biophilic approach, influenced by gardens, permeates both the interior and exterior. The stern opens toward a weir on the St. Lawrence, creating an immersive experience that blends architecture with nature.
Evolution of Guest Experience
The Pavillon positions itself as a more social venue compared to the original Bateau, which enforces silence. While the Pavillon showcases contemporary thermal culture with monumental cold plunges and skylit hot tub halls, the Bateau maintains a monastic, Scandinavian-inspired atmosphere. The expansion reflects Bota Bota’s growth and changing guest expectations for interactive wellness experiences.
The new universal changing area accommodates guests with reduced mobility, offering privacy and accessibility. Operational improvements include reconfigured changing rooms and administrative areas. The upper floors connect to the original vessel via outdoor gardens and pools, enhancing flow between the two structures.
