Interior designer Hazel wanted to style up a rented home, turning a bland living room into a moody showroom space. After moving into a larger house outside Manchester, the north-facing room needed a change. Hazel applied a newly launched mural featuring great blue herons wading through a lily pond, drawing inspiration from ancient Eastern art.
Replacing dated decor
Hazel removed the dated Laura Ashley cream and lilac floral wallpaper from the alcoves and chimney breast. She replaced the cream curtains that blocked the bay window with an Eastern-style wall mural. The landlord’s brown leather sofas were removed during the move-in process. The designer focused on creating a dining area with the mural as a backdrop, using lamps and candles to set the mood.
To add pops of colour, Hazel introduced a mustard sofa, an emerald green velvet love seat, and a coral chair. These pieces work well for business photography. An IKEA shelving unit serves as a TV unit and was upcycled with gold spray paint. The designer also spray-painted grey storage boxes black and applied gold leaf to the handles. A wooden beam was added above the fireplace to frame the space.
Accessorizing the room
Black bamboo lanterns and animal print cushions lift the space. Hazel asked the blind fitter to create a shutter effect by adding black tape to the window area. Gold legs on the furniture tie the elements together. An IKEA bookcase, a drinks cabinet, and a money bank were all revamped with gold paint and black glitter henna art. These items match the scheme perfectly.
The designer noted that the black and gold palette looks more expensive than it is. Animal prints and botanicals create a failsafe combination in the room. Elements of black provide a designer luxe look. Hazel plans to switch the grey rug for a bold geometric design. The landlord is happy with the changes, provided the room is restored before they leave.
Future plans
Hazel creates collaborations with local makers, such as a luxurious dog bed and footstools. These items are among her favorite features. Although saving for a wedding is a priority, Hazel looks forward to owning a home where she can make permanent changes.
